CleanBreeze Biogas Solutions

‘Transforming Waste to Wealth’

The CleanBreeze initiative transforms waste into renewable energy while fostering sustainability and economic growth through innovative biogas
solutions.
CleanBreeze Biogas Solutions offers a robust and sustainable model for tackling waste management and energy challenges. By integrating state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion technology with a strong focus on community involvement and strategic partnerships, CleanBreeze is set to transform waste into valuable resources—biogas and biofertilizers—thereby turning environmental challenges into economic opportunities.

A total of 7,800 tons of municipal solid waste is produced everyday in Kinshasa, according to a study published in scientific journal Heliyon in 2023. Local authorities, the European Union and other organisations have launched programmes to tackle the problem in the densely packed city of 17 million inhabitants. But most initiatives were short-term and city authorities have yet to launch a centralised rubbish collection and treatment programme, leading to mounds of rubbish in rivers, streets, and corners of the city.

How It Works

In major urban centers, CleanBreeze operates centralized biogas facilities capable of processing up to 500,000 tons or more of organic waste each day. The biogas generated from these urban plants is a clean, reliable energy source supplied to both households and industrial facilities.

Rural Plants

In the rural setting, CleanBreeze rolls out decentralized biogas units that process 50-100 tons or more of organic material daily, including agricultural residues and animal waste. This not only provides rural households with essential clean energy but also supports local farmers with high-quality organic fertilizers.

Project Objectives

Primary

Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

CleanBreeze is committed to drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% within the targeted areas.

Process 500,000 Tons or more of Organic Waste Annually

Enhance Access to Clean Energy for 100,000 Households and Small Businesses

Boloka Nafisa (L), 18, works with husband Yuma Haishi Jean-Benie, 22, in a charcoal kiln to collect the charcoal and bring it to market in the center of the village as well as other surrounding areas of Yanonge, 60 km from the city of Kisangani, in the province of Tshopo, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on September 1, 2022. At least 6 trees are felled for this purpose and will produce between 12-13 bags of charcoal. It is produced in conditions where the environment is not polluted. The community leaves the wood for 45 days to reduce the rate of humidity and they produce the charcoal produce within a legal framework from the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) that supports the local community in training as well as in the legal process of obtaining logging documents.

Secondary

Strengthen Community Engagement and Education

To foster a deep understanding and active participation among local communities in the biogas production process.

Promote Sustainable Agricultural Practices

CleanBreeze intends to use the biofertilizers produced from its biogas plants to enhance local agriculture. By partnering with at least 500 local farmers to use these biofertilizers, the goal is to improve soil fertility and crop yields.

Develop and Implement Innovative Technologies

Advancing the efficiency and capacity of biogas technology is a key objective for CleanBreeze. The company invests into research and development to improve biogas production technologies and processes.

Expand Biogas Infrastructure Development

CleanBreeze aims to construct and operationalize 10 additional biogas plants in underserved regions. This expansion will increase waste processing capacity and extend access to clean energy.

Promote Sustainable Agricultural Practices

CleanBreeze is committed to influencing local and national policies to support sustainable waste management and renewable energy solutions.

Benefits

Government Benefits

Increase Revenue Through Taxation and Carbon Credit Sales

CleanBreeze Biogas Solutions projects to significantly enhance its financial footprint by capitalizing on revenue opportunities through enhanced taxation and carbon credit sales.

Support Sustainable Development Goals Through Improved Waste Management and Energy Access

By improving waste management and increasing access to clean energy, CleanBreeze directly contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Boost Agricultural Productivity, Reducing Food Imports and Enhancing National Food Security

CleanBreeze boosts agricultural productivity by supplying local farmers with organic biofertilizers produced from the anaerobic digestion process.

Community Benefits

Job Creation with a Focus on Employing Women

The project is capable of creating over 500 jobs directly in the construction, operation, and maintenance of biogas facilities, with a target of at least 40% female employment in line with SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Access to Affordable Clean Energy

CleanBreeze is capable of supplying biogas to 100,000 households and businesses, contributing to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).

Improved Health Outcomes from Reduced Indoor Air Pollution

Transitioning to biogas reduces the reliance on traditional biomass fuels like wood and charcoal, known causes of indoor air pollution which affects health. According to WHO estimates, reducing indoor air pollution could prevent around 4 million premature deaths annually globally.

Economic Benefits

Samuel Lulembu (2nd L), 24, swaps wood with his colleagues to arrange it correctly on a charcoal kiln in Yanonge, 60 km from the city of Kisangani, in the province of Tshopo, north- East of the Democratic Republic of Congo on September 1, 2022.
